Icelandic horses

The Vikings brought the first horses to Iceland in between the year 865 and 930. In the last year the Icelanders with an edict, which is still in force, banned lead any horses on the island and that the horse, once leaving Iceland may no longer come back. With this they provided a thousand year pure breeding, through which the particularity of the Icelandic horses has clarified.

The Viking’s horses from Iceland, which are also the oldest pedigree breed managed, kept almost unchanged image; their descendants are nowadays Icelandic horses.

The Icelandic horses are known for their giants (walk, trot, gallop, pace and tölt), friendly nature and lively temperament, durability and robustness as well as colourful and dense hair. They are very helpful and willing to collaborate and at the same time friendly and mild.

For ride those horses, in addition to the basic of English riding you need to know the specific of riding Icelandic horses. Since this breed of horse is something special it also requires special equipment, from thinner bridle to Icelandic type of saddles. They are most suitable for sports and recreation purposes.
